Moroccan octopus: what you need to know
Species and fishing grounds
The common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) is one of the most valuable species in Moroccan fisheries. It is mainly caught along the southern Atlantic coast, from the Agadir region down to Dakhla, by artisanal, coastal and offshore fleets. Morocco is one of the world's leading octopus suppliers, especially for Southern Europe and Japan.
Fishing seasons and biological rest
To protect the resource, octopus fishing in Morocco is managed through quotas and organised in two campaigns a year, a winter campaign and a summer campaign, separated by biological rest periods. Dates are set every year by the Department of Maritime Fisheries. Frozen octopus gives you a product of consistent quality all year round, including during closures.
Quality and uses
Atlantic octopus from Morocco is valued for its firm, flavourful flesh. Sorted and graded on arrival, it is quickly frozen, whole or cleaned, IQF or in blocks. It is suited to food service, processors (seafood salads, canned products, ready meals) and retail, for both Mediterranean and Asian cuisines.
Frequently asked questions
How is octopus graded?
Octopus is graded by unit weight, in kilograms per piece. Available sizes depend on landings: tell us which ones you need in your price request.
Why choose frozen octopus?
Fast freezing preserves texture, naturally tenderises the flesh and allows the product to be shipped over long distances without breaking the cold chain.
